v.1.1. Rev. 03/2021
All songs titles should be in double quotes. Be mindful of when a song title ends in an apostrophe (e.g., “Truckin’”; “Good Lovin’”); it is easy to omit the apostrophe or the double-quote.
Confusion over some Grateful Dead song titles persists (e.g., the suite “That’s It For the Other One”). We recognize the historical and copyright issues that complicate this issue and others, such as “Dancing in the Street” vs. “Dancing in the Streets.” We have sought to balance scholarly clarity with the copyright history that often complicates nomenclature.
This list largely follows Trist and Dodd, The Complete Annotated Grateful Dead Lyrics (Free Press, 2005), with a few exceptions.
For traditional songs and other works with numerous variants (e.g., “Good Morning Little Schoolgirl”), the title given here tries to balance copyright, convention, and Grateful Dead usage.
Common but incorrect variants (e.g., “Lovelight”) are indicated with a strikethrough and a pointer to the correct title. In the case of “Cosmic Charlie,” we use the spelling most commonly used in published recordings; if it is necessary to cite Hunter’s title as published in his A Box of Rain, then his spelling, “Cosmic Charley,” may be used, with a note to explain that decision.
It is not necessary to use complete titles for all songs when short forms are common. In such cases, always use the full title when first cited, then the short form (e.g., “Keep Your Day Job” for the first mention, then “Day Job”).
In general, this list follows the rules for capitalization of titles of works in Chicago (17th ed., 8.157) and Holoman, Writing About Music (3rd ed., 1.20).
